Services

The Office of Enterprise Development (OED) facilitates the commercialization of technologies developed by University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences faculty, so that the public may benefit from University discoveries and inventions.

OED helps faculty who are ready to take their research to the next level—where moving it forward means moving it out of the University and into the hands of a business partner.

As a service of the senior vice chancellor, we work in close partnership with the Office of Technology Management (OTM) to provide strategies for success and assistance with developing your idea into a viable commercial opportunity. OED can help you:

  • Evaluate the market potential of a concept
  • Analyze competition and barriers to success
  • Examine and plan for intellectual property protection
  • Identify nontraditional funding sources for development
  • Describe your invention as a business opportunity that can be easily understood by potential funders and industry partners
  • Provide guidance with planning for commercialization, including new company creation
  • Foster industry collaborations around key technologies developed at Pitt
  • Educate researchers in entrepreneurship
  • Organize networking and showcasing events to create convergence of business, technology, and opportunity

OED works with researchers at many stages of the commercialization process. The chart below describes how OED works in tandem with OTM, providing assistance to help create new products and services.
